Chemical Cleaning Formulated for Your Pipeline Needs
N2 Solutions' Pipeline Chemical Cleaning begins with lab analysis of sample debris present in your pipeline. From there, we formulate a custom cleaning solution engineered to clean effectively without compromising pipeline safety.
Our recyclable, oil-soluble formulations also reduce costs and environmental impact.

Pipelines Need More Than Mechanical Cleaning
High-pressure pipelines accumulate contaminants like:
- black powder
- asphaltenes
- compressor oils
- paraffin waxes
- microorganisms
- salt, sand, dirt, and scale
- lubricants
- hydrates
Left untreated, these contaminants can:
Increase operating pressures needed to achieve the same throughput
which decreases overall line productivity
Disrupt the accuracy of inspection tools during in-line inspections
resulting in distorted data and potentially requiring repeat runs
Increase downtime
which also increases costs for the operator
Mechanical pigging dislodges deposits but also redistributes or breaks down solids, rather than removing them, which can still interfere with inspection accuracy.
N2 Solutions' chemical cleaning programs go beyond mechanical removal to break down and suspend contaminants, leaving pipelines cleaner, safer, and ILI-ready.
Online Chemical Cleaning
Online chemical cleaning enables a complete pipeline cleaning regimen to be implemented while the pipeline remains online and operational—a practice that maximizes uptime for the operator. Online cleaning is facilitated through a process called liquid separation.
Liquid Separation: How It Works
Cleaning chemicals are injected inside the pipeline ahead of a customized pig.
The pig is then propelled through the system along with the product.
Upon run completion, excess liquids and solids are isolated from the line via a separator and deposited into a frac tank.
All the while, the product continues uninterrupted through the system.
Filtration
Additives and contaminants that accumulate in pipelines must be removed before the product reaches end users. Impurities in the transmission stream can include:
- Liquids and suspended solids
- Iron sulfide
- Residual liquid hydrocarbons
- Compressor lubricants
Filter separators use engineered filtration elements, such as coalescing filters, to capture and remove unwanted liquids and particles.
As the gas or liquid stream passes through the unit, the product continues downstream with minimal restriction, while entrained droplets and solids are collected within the filter and removed from the system. This process ensures cleaner product delivery and improved protection for downstream equipment.
Offline Chemical Cleaning
It is not always necessary to conduct full-scale cleaning while the pipeline remains operational. In these instances, cleaning regimens can be performed during scheduled shutdowns of the line.
During offline cleaning, chemicals are again injected ahead of the pig and propelled through the line, but do not need to be “separated” from the existing product flow because the line is not operational.
While this method increases downtime, it can effectively facilitate a multitude of needed maintenance activities if a shutdown is already planned or underway.
